    Playoffs?!?

Thursday, April 23, 2009, 11:07 AM EST [General]

If you couldn't tell by my title, this is going to be a blog about the playoffs. Yeah I know, I laid the sarcasm on a little thick. I apologize, its just my nature.

Anyways, I realized that I haven't blogged in a while, actually 233 days since I last blogged. Wow, I mean come on....what is wrong with me? Well this fact was brought to my attention by Admin, eh?. So here it is.

    [insert blog here]

With the playoffs upon us, the NBA created this new widget based of their "Amazing Happens Here" tag line. (Also, I feel it's a must that I bring this to your attention since I work on the web). It's a really cool widget that allows to create you own highlight reel from favorite playoff moments (see mine below). Yes of course, mine includes only Cavaliers moments, but seriously what other video highlights would you want?

As I was piecing my widget together, I came across the LeBron video in which he dropped 25 straight points on the Pistons in Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals. I remember it vividly as I sat there alone in my apartment in Niles, OH. (Yes Niles, OH. There is such a place. If you have never been there...don't. There's a mall and a baseball field. That's it.) The most nerve racking game, but most exciting game at the same time. If my neighbors didn't know I was a Cleveland fan, they new after that game.

The point of this trip down memory lane is that this one game will be burned into my memory for ever. Unfortunately for me, it's not the best story to brag about one's social life. Game 6, however, is a little more memorable for me - and my social life.

When Daniel Gibson was dropping 31 points on the Pistons to send the Wine and Gold to their first ever trip to the NBA Finals, I was in a bar in Pittsburgh. The reason I was in Pittsburgh was for a Pirates game (Don't worry I'm an Indians fan) with a bunch of my coworkers at the time. If I would have know that Cavs would be playing for their first Eastern Conference Championship, trust me I would have never bought the ticket ahead of time.

There I was at the game, receiving text updates from friends during the first half and waiting for the last out so I could book it to the closest bar to watch game 6. Luckily for me the Pirates decided to win in record time and there was a shot clock malfunction that delayed the Cavaliers and Pistons. I ran to the nearest bar to catch the second half and see LeBron jump in Z's arms in celebration after they won.

So, this probably brings to questions to your mind. First, why are you still ready this blog? And second, what does all of this have to do with a widget? Is it a magic widget? Not really, but it did take me back to a great week of Cavaliers basketball. One that I will remember for the rest of my life. And as the current Cavaliers are in the midst of their playoff run, one that we all hope ends more memorable as the 2007 run, I wanted to hear from all of you. What are your favorite playoff memories? Where were you at when Damon Jones hit the game winning shot in game 6 against the Wizards? Who were you with when Cavs faced off against the Bulls in the early 90s? Where are you going to be during this year's run?

Either comment on this blog, send me a message or look my for my discussion topic on the forums (I made it easy for you to find...there is a link). Then we'll go from there and see what memories we make this season.

    Oh yeah, here's the widget.

    Fall is Here!

Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 09:32 PM EST [General]

This past Thursday, the official end of summer came as the first action (that counts) on the gridiron took place - others may believe that the end of summer begins on the first day of fall (September 22nd), but in this man's opinion, they are sorely wrong. That's right everyone football season is upon us - even more so when the Brownies kick off this Sunday against "America's Team" (I place quotation marks around America's Team because their so-called fans didn't even make the top ten in this ESPN list).

Now don't get me wrong, I love summer, and any golfer would, but my favorite time of the year is when you can wake up on Saturday morning and watch football until Monday night (even now you can watch on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday). Baseball maybe America's pastime and basketball maybe the sport in which I am employed in, but it's football that really gets me going. What's better than tailgating, hard-hitting, game winning drives and the Losers' Pool. Even advertisers use the holiest day of football to release their new television ad campaigns (For those non-football fans, I am talking about the day of the Super Bowl).

Not with me yet, well I'll give a few more reasons why this is such a great time of the year. In the last two years alone we saw some of the greatest performances in sports occur and although cliche, each of these examples happen to be battles between what look to be David vs. Goliath. 1. Boise State and Oklahoma faced off in one of the greatest college football games ever to be played. It ended with a hook-n-ladder, option pass to a tight end, a gamble with the statue of liberty, and even a marriage proposal. 2. The New York Football Giants take on the undefeated and supposedly unstoppable New England Patriots only to win the biggest game on the biggest stage. Too bad Tiki Barber left for the television spotlight before the season began. Sorry Tiki! 3. Lastly, my favorite, Appalachian State went into the big house and upset the #5 Michigan Wolverines in what turned out to be Lloyd Carr's last season.

And even after explaining all this, I feel like there is something I am missing....oh yeah the BCS. While most of you are debating about putting in a playoff system and getting rid of this system that decides who goes to the National Title game and who doesn't, I am all about it. The BCS, while it may have it flaws (what doesn't), provides college football the one thing that is sought after by every sport - drama. Every year, any team that wants to prove they are the best must win each and every week to secure the best opportunity to play in the title game. One mishap or misue can ruin a team's entire season. And heck, it creates more of a buzz around the game because every year, every sports talk show debates whether it should stay or it should go. And guess what? The next season begins and the BCS is still in place.

So basically, whether it's the college game or the NFL, it's can't miss T.V. The first weekend is over and it's only just beginning as we can look forward to many more to come. Already we've seen Michigan fall again in week one, my Bowling Green Falcons topple another top 25 team in Pittsburgh, and the NFL make their final cuts as they gear up for the season to start on Thursday. What can be better?

Thanks for the comment! Those pics are actually of Bertman family members, as well as the current owner's Grandfather who had a barnstorming baseball team back in the day. I had to do a lot of retouching on the photo, and the team name was actually the Bertman Pickles. I had to take the word Pickles off the front of each jersey. Not fun, but it came out great. Thanks again!
