    Playing the Greeks

Monday, October 12, 2009, 02:35 PM EST [General]

Hey Fanatics! Be sure to check it out tonight as the Cavs go against Olympiakos, a team with 8 Greek born players (guys who play for the Greek National team) three Americans, and four other foreign born players.

LeBron has a history with these guys, since Greece upset the USA in the FIBA Worlds, two summers ago in Japan. As a result, Greece won the silver medal and the Americans got the bronze that year, but we know what happened with the Red, White and Blue since.

It will be fun to watch Shaq go against the one they call, "Baby Shaq", 310 pound center, Sofoklis Schortsanitis, the big Greek center had numerous dunks against the US in that contest in '07.

A lot of the Olympiakos players have either been drafted by NBA teams, or have had squads over here, consider taking them. So, the visitors have plenty of talent.

You know Josh Childress, Von Wafer and Linas Kleiza because of their NBA experience. Patrick Beverly is a guy who played for Arkansas, and was drafted this past summer by the Lakers.

For Anthony Parker, this will be fun, since he played with two of the guys for Olympiakos, when they were together winning titles with Maccabi, during AP's 5 year run in Israel.

    See you tonight at 7...

    Hitting the Road

Saturday, October 10, 2009, 08:18 PM EST [General]

This is the first road shootaround for the Cavs as they get set to meet the Charlotte Bobcats, who beat the Hornets the other night…so they come in 1-1..

Today’s practice was held at the College of Charleston, where former Georgia Tech coach, Bobby Cremins now resides…Cremins and some of his team came to watch the end of practice, asking LeBron to shot a turnaround 3 at his own bucke

t…LB missed…so, to make amends, from the same spot, heaved one to the other end of the floor, about 70 feet…and of course he drilled it…the eyes of the players fell out of their heads…

Moments later, Cremins sent his best 3 point shooter on the floor to receive some passes from the King…and each one clanked off the rim….LeBron said, “cmon, you make these”…but each one misfired…eventually the young man went to the short corner, and coach Brown fed him a pass, and he drained it…Maybe a little star struck, taking a toss from the MVP…

Danny Green was a big interview request from the local media since of course he and the Tar Heels took care of business against the Gam****...we have our own one on one here on the site..(he gave us his best answers!!!)

Join us for the radio broadcast on the Cavs Radio network ...

    Checking in From Charleston, SC

Friday, October 9, 2009, 07:24 PM EST [General]

We're in the charming city of Charleston, SC, about 200 miles south of Charlotte, as the Cavs will look at the Bobcats for the 2nd time this week.

A lot of history here of course, including The Citadel, which is a 3-iron away from our hotel (For Austin, probably a 6 iron!).

Jamario Moon did not make the trip, instead getting a couple of wisdom teeth extracted.  I'm amazed he was able to do his part in the Flashes of Hope Big Shots and Little Stars event last night at The Q.  Jamario, along with Boobie, Mo, D-Block, AP, Leon, JJ, and Danny strolled down the runway in a fashion show.  Jamario was able to flash that big grin of his, wearing a fur coat...smiling right now is a little bit of a chore as he recovers.

The biggest auction item by the way was a pair of trips on the team plane for some lucky Cavs fans...the trips alone raised nearly ,000 for Flashes of Hope and the Children's Tumor Foundation.  It was a spectacular night a the Q...check out the story on Cavs.com.

On a separate, note, how about a salute to Joe Tait, who will go into the Monmouth College (IL) Hall of Fame tomorrow...way to go Joe! The Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield can't be too far behind...hopefully soon.

    Wine & Gold Recap

Saturday, October 3, 2009, 06:29 PM EST [General]

What a crowd at JAR Arena...wall-to-wall, to welcome the LeBron, the Big Witness, and the rest of the '09-'10 Cavaliers to the Wine and Gold scrimmage...Shaq reminded us all, that after all he is close to a 60% shooter for his NBA career...He then proceeded to score on his 1st 5 attempts in this game...soft touches from the left block, then the right...a little hook later, to go with a bucket on a give and go...He then scored on an easy lay-up, by running the floor...good old early offense...

Shaq says he is about 8 days away from being in season condition, which tells you he has come into camp in very good shape...and all his teammates and coaches have noticed...

LeBron said he spent a lot of time this off season on the scoring game inside the three point line...boxes and elbows specifically...in other words from the low post, and the foul line extended...you know he'll get to the rack which he did early for an "and 1" opportunity....He also scored on a tough, tough floater going through the lane, and falling right...He says don't worry about spacing with Shaq drawing attention inside...LBJ figures that will come naturally as everyone gets used to playing with the big fella...and because Shaq is such a willing passer down there, the other four guys know they will be rewarded...

I spoke about the depth earlier this week while watching this team go through the paces of week 1 of camp...we saw it again in this scrimmage...with JJ Hickson, Anthony Parker, Jamario Moon and Danny Green all doing things in a variety of ways...You know what Z, Andy, Mo and Delonte will bring, to go with the King...Mike has a pleasant task...finding minutes for so many guys, including Boobie, who hit three jumpers in this one...

Green definitely made a statement...Mike says the credit goes to Danny Ferry and his staff for going deep in drafting this Tar Heel...Danny recalls showing Mike some You Tube clips of Green this past summer...and then joked, Mike has been hooked on You Tube ever since....

See you Tuesday night in Fox Sports Ohio....we're back!!

    Back in the Gym

Thursday, October 1, 2009, 01:50 PM EST [General]

Hey Cavs Nation! The Wine and Golders are indeed back!!! And wow is it great to be back!

A lot of camp has been spent teaching, which is typical...instituting new wrinkles, and reviewing tried and true elements on both sides of the floor. Part of the tedious instruction is to implement the new guys, and reinforce things for the returnees. Obviously when they start going 5 on 5, my antenna goes up.

The first thing you will notice On Tuesday night on Fox Sports Ohio, is how deep this team is, guys who can get it done at every position with many interchangeable parts. It's an even more athletic team now(AC can't wait!!!). To speak to the depth, Jawad Williams nailed 3 straight triples from the left wing, all with a quick trigger. Seconds later, from that identical spot, LeBron went draino too, and smiled, adding, "I have a hair trigger too".

Early perceptions include Shaq, who looks good...he's moving very well and yes, we've all watched him for 17 years, but until you see him in that practice uniform, you can't really appreciate how mammoth he is. You can not move that guy!. As I'm writing this, he just scored on an early offensive lay-in, and got hacked, "Shaq-knifing" his way to the hoop. He didn't even flinch as the ball went through. Moments later, he was among the first down the floor, and caught a bullet from Mo on the block...count it!!! Oh, and we know how good of a passer he is from the block...I think you'll see the always moving, Anderson Verejao get a lot of weak side lay-ups the way he has done with LBJ getting the assist.

LeBron looks as fresh as can be...attacking, dishing, finishing his last two nasty drives (Are you kidding me is all I can say!). He just drove base line in front of me...the coaches were counting down the shot clock..."4...3...2..." The King rose from 15 and went bottom, saying "1", to finish the 24 second clock as it went through.

Jamario Moon has a good looking stroke, (better than I thought since we only saw him four times a season). So does the man they call "AP", Anthony Parker, who hit a left corner 3 which he can do in his sleep. But he drew the biggest roar when he drew a charge at the defensive end just above the free throw line...LeBron was the first to pick him up, yelling "way to go AP".

J.J. Hickson looks 100% as he just beat everyone down the floor, caught the pass and flushed. Mike Brown loved the hustle.

This is going to be something!!!

Hope to see you at the JAR on Saturday for the Wine and Gold scrimmage.
