Merriman to play despite two torn ligaments.

I think this guy is making a huge mistake.  There are no guaranteed contracts in the NFL.  If he can't play after this season, or after a few games, he'll get cut and not have anything.  I know he's trying to play the tough guy, but c'mon.  Don't be stupid!

I agree he is one of my favorite players and as much as I want him to play there is no since in risking your career for one season

No matter how good you are, you're going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you're going to win one-third of your games. It's the other third that makes the difference.

Big mistake,  he needs to think about his future outside of the NFL.

I think every Charger fan should love him for this. He knows they have a couple years left to win it all and hes not gonna let that opportunity pass.

For once, an athlete actually seems to be caring more about winning than money. Its refreshing.

Even if I was a Charger fan, I think I would much rather him be assured the ability to walk beyond this year, rather than have him come back so soon and risk losing that ability.

My Cleveland Browns wishlist:

1. Replace Derek Anderson with Brady Quinn. (check)
2. Fire Romeo Crennel. (check)
3. Hire Bill Cowher, Marty Schottenheimer or Brian Billick.
4. DO NOT trade Kellen Winslow.
5. Acquire a current or potential pro-bowler at linebacker, through draft, trade or free agency.

Yeah this is an amazing thing for him to even attempt to do for the team. The team should restructure his contract and gurantee a bit more of his money for this act. Most athletes would never do anything like this, its a big risk on his part.

Yes.  This is remarkably stupid.  Charger fans will love it up until the 4th week when he gets hurt and can't play football ever again.  If he has the surgery he misses the season.  If he doesn't he still probably misses most of the season and then doesn't come back.

He might be all about winning and everything but he's also got to realize that that, if the Chargers really have a 2 year window, he will definitely be there for one of them if he has the surgery.  If he doesn't he might not even be there through midseason.

Jose Calderon will finally be recognized as a Top 3 PG in the league this season.

Three or four days ago, on SportsCeetnter they said it was career threatening.. now hes going to play?

it isn't like this is the last year they are going to have LT, Gates, Rivers, Castillo... they are gonna have great players for the next few years...

some may say he's helping their chances at a superbowl this year, and i couldn't disagree more... everyone will be going after his knees, they'll take the chop block pentaly... get the surgery, come back next year..

I think it's stupid.  His contract is up after next year.  Why not have the surgery and play for a new contract on a new knee next season? Playing this year will probably only hurt his future deal.

From what I read, he can play, but he'll be a shell of his former self.  If that's the case, it would be in the Chargers best interest to start Jyles Tucker instead of Merriman.  If that's the case, just have the surgery, dude.  You might not play anyways.
