Eric Snow: What's next?

So what's going to happen with this guy?

We've all heard the talk about going into coaching and broadcasting, but so far it's just talk. Can he be bought out, and WILL he go for a buyout? Seems to me if he really wants to help the Cavs out, he'll stop being an unofficial coach on the pine and get moving with the next phase of his career. But I'm getting the feeling he's not quite ready to clean out his locker.

What do you guys see in his not so distant future?

He'll either be a coach or go overseas and make 100 million lol.  I wonder what they would offer him. But I do agree with you that he needs to move a few seats down on the bench to the coaching section.  I also think Mark Price should be hired as our FT coach.   But thats just wishfull thinking.

I was under the impression he was potentially going to retire which would mean he would still get paid but his salary wouldn't go against the salary cap.  I haven't heard a thing about that since early on the off season, so my guess is that they may be exploring trades.

Golfer, can you clear this up for me?  I feel like I may be mixing up facts.

As far as his future, I definitely see him being a coach or in broadcasting.  He seems like he is well-liked around the league and has what it takes.

Ever thus to deadbeats, Lebowski.

And then there's the consideration of trade value, as in the follwing scenario--

"...if the Cavs do end up signing a big man, it'll probably be as a 5th/6th big man spot; not a 4th big man spot. That really only leaves the trade market to get one...Just don't expect the Cavs to waste many assets on whatever guy they trade for. They're going to try and save their main assets (Wally Szczerbiak, Anderson Varejao, 1st round pick and maybe even Delonte West) for the trade deadline, to hopefully acquire that #2 option we still need. Expect them to try and acquire this player for pieces like Eric Snow (his contract), Trade Exceptions (we have 2), 2nd round picks (one next year), Non-guaranteed contracts (Billy Thomas and Lance Allred) and maybe even a guy like Sasha Pavlovic..."

That's a $7,310,000 expiring--not huge but not small either. In combination he could yield something. I'd find that preferable to seeing him sitting and watching. That's getting painful.

He'll make a good coach, or a an asst. coach. I like the guy, and wish him best of luck!

53.  How do retired players count
against the cap?

Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the
player has retired.  For example, James Worthy retired in 1994,
two years before his contract ended.  He continued to receive his
salary for the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, so his salary
was included in the Lakers' team salary in those seasons.  It is
at the team's discretion (or as the result of an agreement between
the team and player) whether to continue to pay the player after he
has retired.

There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his
salary, but the salary is not included in the team's team salary.
This is when a player is forced to retire for medical reasons and a
league-appointed physician confirms that he is medically unfit to
continue playing.
There is a waiting period of one year
following the injury or illness before a team can apply for this salary
cap relief.  If the waiting period expires mid-season (on any date
prior to the last day of the regular season), then the player's entire
salary
for that season is removed from the team's team salary.  For
example, in March 2003 the Knicks were allowed to remove Luc Longley's
entire 2002-03
salary from their books (and since the luxury tax is based on the team
salary as of the
last day of the regular season, the Knicks avoided paying any tax on
Longley's salary).  This provision can also be used when a player
dies while under contract.

Teams are not allowed to trade for disabled players and then apply for
this salary cap relief.  Only the team for which the player was
playing when he was disabled may request this relief.

If a player retires, even for medical reasons, his team does not receive a salary cap exception to acquire a replacement player.

It is my understanding that Ferry has applied to the league for salary relief for Eric.  I have not heard anything about this for a month or two.

Maybe Brian Windhorst could find out something about this - we should ask him.

From the News-Herald:

"Technically, the Cavs can still trade point guard Eric Snow, but they wouldn't be able to use the injury exception. There is no update on Snow's injury settlement with the insurance company."

Im really hoping we get a chance to use his contract to get us a solid player, preferably a quality back-up big who can play some center, but not just get a stiff just to get someone of course.
