When you have limited funds, you shop in the bargain basement. The Vet's Minimum is 1.2 million with the league paying some of that. Wright is not a big investment. Having him will not guarantee a championship. That isn't what the 14th or 15th man on the roster is suppose to bring to the table. He quite possibly will bring more to the team than most that have been at the bottom of the roster.

Exactly.  You don't win championships with the 14th or 15th guy on your team contributing big.  This is a good pickup for what it is, a cheap, veteran insurance policy who could be a good locker room presence and mentor for the new bigs.

we are still going to rely on hickson to be the 3rd or 4th big off the bench. i really hope hickson is really ready to handle the nba now

it will be an all out battle between him and jj...my hopes is the pt goes jj's way because if not jj will ride the bench all year and be another wasted 1st round pick like shannon was

As much as you regular posters talk about trade ideas and Danny Ferry's mental process, why hasn't anyone mentioned they idea of leverage?  It's not a bold move, or a very powerful one, it's a necessary one.  If we are going to negotiate a trade for a REAL big, having only 3 proven players worthy of real playing time, we are in a weak position.  Signing Wright strengthens our position, even if only by a small margin.

Insurance, mentor, AND leverage.

Why are people calling this an good insurance policy? ? ?For the money the Cavs are paying Z and Wallace, they would be considered in the Jag/Vette range. I'm sure most people owning such a vehicle would have very good insurance. What kind of insurance gives you a Pinto while your main car is down? This guy is garbage, plus we have plenty of player/teachers on this team.

This sucks. My hopes for a championship just went WAY down. Virtually this means that our 4th big man will either be this stiff or JJ. If were trying to win a championship, that is not good. Not good at all.

We need to trade for a legitimate big man, not sign an older Dwayne Jones. Hopefully this is just for depth and we still make a trade.

I sure hope Ferry isnt hoping the perfect guy is there for a trade at the deadline, because that is highly unlikely. We need to get the team together before camp so they can gel.

Waiting for the deadline is a huge risk., IMO.

Um ... the only way we can really trade for a legitimate big man is if we give up Wally or another expiring contract. This would be a dumb move on our part seeing as we will have the most space out of any team in the league to sign another all-star, along with LeBron. I understand we haven't won a championship in Cleveland in almost an eternity, but good things take time.

Look at the Browns progress. Slowly but surely, 10 years after our return to the league, we have aruguably the best offense and offensive line in the game, and we are just a few proven cornerbacks away from being a major force in the NFL. Same goes for the Cavs, we have good pieces right now, and with LBJ, that makes us a GREAT team. Just imagine what we will look like in a year if we add another all-star or "close to all-star" player. Patience is a virtue.

insurance signing, in case of an injury. you gotta believe Ferry will still be looking for a 'quality' big man, in which Wright does not fill that bill. He'll be good for his garbage minutes and maybe an occasion 9-5 game. That's it, nothing to get overly excited, or overly frustrated over.

CLEVELAND, OH - September 5th, 2008 - The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed veteran center Lorenzen Wright to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wright, 33, played 12 games last season with the Atlanta Hawks and five games with the Sacramento Kings. The 6-foot-11, 255 pound center was drafted by the L.A. Clippers with the seventh overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft and has played in 761 career games (445 starts) with averages of 8.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

“Lorenzen brings us valuable size and experience and adds depth to our front court,” Ferry said. “We think he’s a good fit for us and look forward to him joining our team.”

The 12-year veteran has appeared in 15 postseason games (11 starts) and averaged 7.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Like it or not hes a part of the team now! He will add some depth to the frontcourt but its nothing to get too excited over. Like everyone has said...hes just an insurance body

If he can return to his past form and give us around 7-8 pts with some rebounds he will be a solid pickup.
