Cavs Sign Jackson

This explains why the Cavs were not offering the full MLE after a certain point this summer.  A three year deal for Jackson would have had to come from the MLE.

Former Kansas University basketball forward Darnell Jackson, who on Friday signed a three-year guaranteed contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, e-mailed a letter to the Journal-World this week.

He'll be a good big man for us in the future. He's looked like he has a decent midrange shot, and he can defend.

That's a classy letter. I know that the Cavs were impressed by Darnell's personality when they brought him in for a pre-draft workout. I think that he will be the best fifth big man that the team has had in the last four years, and I'm not saying that as a Dwayne Jones basher. I thought that Dwayne did an adequate job as a fifth big man last year. I wish Dwayne luck going forward, and I think that he will continue to improve as a defender and rebounder if he gets a chance with someone.

By comparison, I think that Darnell Jackson (is he DJ3 or does being a current Cav make him just DJ?) has more all-around skill despite having a smaller body. I like a fifth big man to be able to play multiple positions, so it was important to me that he showed the ability to play some minutes at the center position if need be. His block of an Andray Blatche reverse layup attempt in the one Summer League game was one of the ten or twenty best blocks I've ever seen.

One question for me is whether he'll get the chance to beat out Lorenzen right away or whether they send him to the NBDL. If I'm not mistaken, the current Cavs regime feels that guys learn more being with the team than playing in the development league. They seem to only send guys there for brief stints to get them sharp.

All in all, I think that Darnell's draft night acquistion was a good move. Danny's had a very good offseason so far, but as one of the few people who hated last year's big trade, I still don't think that the current team is as good as the pre-trade team was. Signing Delonte would put them in the ballpark. I just have big reservations about the starting power forward position. The only person on the team who might be capable of handling that position at some point is J.J. Hickson, but how long will it take, if ever, for that to occur?

Theres a chance this guy could have some minutes for the Cavs. Hes supposed to be more NBA-ready than people think. Id love to see him beat out Wright for the 5th spot.

But he'll probably spend alotta time in the D-league.

If he has a guaranteed contract, can he be sent to the d-league?

Yep, you can send any rookie/sophomore to the D-League.

-Go to Z more, we stopped going to Z after the Denver game.
-Get Gibson involved so he isn't forcing shots.
-Sasha plays for personal glory.
-TRADE SASHA.
-TRADE WALLY.
-Play Hickson more with the first unit.
-Make better coaching adjustments.(Miami did the same things to us defensively in Miami, that they did in Cleveland. It worked both times.)
Play with intensity again.

The guy doesnt put up big scoring numbers, but he could make open jumpers from anywhere. The reason the cavs picked him up is for his size and rebounding abilities. He's a guy i see averaging 7PPG and 9RPG throughout his career(IMO).

I am surprised to see that they gave him a three year guaranteed contract.  They must be impressed with something about him.

I think its very interesting that he got a three-year deal. Most 2nd round picks don't even get guaranteed contracts.

I'm really hoping that JJ and DJIII (I like it whoever mentioned it above) have shown our Front Office enough that we can make a move for a SG rather than more big man depth, because if they can step up, we go from having shaky Big Man depth to a very young and deep bench.
