When I was a kid I was always amazed at the size of the tv screen at sporting events. Sometimes even today, I can catch myself watching the big screen in the sky instead of watching the action on the court or the field. I guess you get sucked into watching it because growing up with a black and white 13" tv will allow anything else to be completely incredible so you just have to watch it! Now, with the recent addition of the mega billion dollar Cowboys stadium - even I have to say Jumbotrons have got completely out of control. (But I can't wait to see the NBA All-Star game there this year.) When I first saw that thing I thought the jokers on MNF put a computer generated screen at the top of the stadium... kinda like when they put up their own adds or make two football helmets crash into one another.
So what is so fun about jumbotrons? Well I think it's the rush and excitement you feel when you realize, for a whopping 8.2 seconds, you are now JumboTron famous.
Now I'm not going to lie, in my day (years ago, today, and in the future) I will and have been Jumbrotron famous. My best spots have been in Cleveland, Charlotte, and Green Bay. And what makes it even more Jumbotron famous than just telling your friends you made it on the big screen? - it's having proof. see JumbroTron exhibit A: www.cavfanatic.com/justsignit/gallery/vi...
I find it easier to get on the big screen if you have a game plan ahead of time or something funny to show the crowd. I'm one to don a costume and make sure the camera man knows exactly where I am sitting. As you can see from my picture embedded above, my thing is Busine$$ Lebron... i.e. the Nike commercials back when Lebron had the four personalities. Nothing like a white guy with an afro in a white suit, white shoes, white belt, and white tie talking on his cell phone making deals with no one on the line... "Yeah baby, I'm going to have to call you back" It's all in good fun when it comes to Busine$$ Lebron. That was Round #1 Game #1 of last years playoffs. I made a 100 friends that day walking out of the Q... people saw me and told me they did. "That's right, you ain't got it like I got it" But no one can beat the guy who stands in the corner of the Q on the floor who brings in an art portfolio briefcase of signs. He told me that day he has been on the Jumbotron something like 1,500 times and on tv 200+ times in his Jumbotron famous career. He's a professional! Well... "hey buddy, I made it on 7 times that day - that's a record in my book!"
My advice to all those kids out there and to all the big adult kids out there, keep your dreams alive; make your Office Max posters at the Q and go wild and crazy when you hit the big screen. But make sure you're are paying attention because you never know when the camera man will find you.
