Still, if people did glorify the unconditioned nineteen-sixties--if they had fantasies about social justice and personal autonomy, if they thought that universities could make themselves independent of a government whose policies they hated or that individuals could make themselves independent of a society whose values they regarded as sick -- those were just the conditions of the time. One had to live with them, knowing that they contained within themselves the seeds of their own undoing. All push becomes pull someday. Criticism is about understanding how this happens.
