Cleveland Indians Free Agency FAQ: Pitchers

Sunday, November 30, 2008, 08:56 AM EST [General]

Part 2 of my Free Agency, looking at the pitching of free agency, it's been said that closer role is the #1 thing to get this off-season, Then bullpen help/Right-Handed Starter so here are candidates starting with starting pitching

    SP:
    Paul Byrd
    Bartolo Colon
    Jon Garland
    Jason Jennings
    Braden Looper
    Jon Lieber
    Pedro Martinez
    Jaime Moyer
    Mark Mulder
    Carl Pavano
    Brad Penny
    Oliver Perez
    Mark Prior
    Ben Sheets
    Randy Wolf

Now to rule out some guys, Randy Wolf, Brad Penny, Ben Sheets, will be the highest paid of the group, so rule all three out, we aren't gonna pay for them, Martinez and Colon are a little washed up, so im ruling them out, Mulder I would only take for a short-term cheap contract, I don't expect that, Jennings should go back to the national league, so heres what I think of what's left

Jon Garland/Oliver Perez- still young may go under the radar, Garland had an off season

Mark Prior/Carl Pavano- Injury prone, maybe give a one year shot, maybe should be in the bullpen

Moyer/Lieber/Byrd- old guys that can pitch, I would love Moyer to come to Cleveland, to teach sowers

Braden Looper- Okay starter, Former closer, will he be a closer maybe again

Now to the the closer roles/help in the bullpen

    RP:
    Joe Beimel
    Chad Cordero
    Brian Fuentes
    Eric Gagne
    Tom Gordon
    Eddie Guardado
    Trevor Hoffman
    Bob Howry
    Jason Isringhausen
    Brandon Lyon
    Darren Oliver
    Dennys Reyes
    Brian Shouse
    Kerry Wood
    Jamey Wright

Now I would rule out Fuentes and Oliver, both have way too much interest by teams that can outbid us, then i'll rule out Gagne, Guardado, Gordon they are a little washed up, I think if we want Cordero we will have to overpay for him, I would rather have Hoffman for that much, so im ruling him out, even tho he may be a true option, so here's what I think of who is left

Wright- He's a decent pitcher, who is a spot starter, he did well for Texas, he would be an insurance policy if we get him

Beimel- Veteran that seems to know what he is doing, I would like him to be picked up, but I don't know his price

Wood/Isringhausen- Both veterans, but Wood doesn't stay healthy and neither has Isringhausen, but I would take a chance on them if we needed to but im sure Wood would want too much

Shouse- I didn't know of his name til I looked up his stats, hes seems pretty good, he may go under the radar, he would make a nice Middle Relief guy

Howry/Reyes- Both veterans that know how to pitch, both are possible set-up guys, Howry is older but he had his best years in Cleveland, im sure we can bring him back, I don't know eithers price tho

Lyon/Hoffman- More than likely we will sign one or the other as our closer, Hoffman will only be short time due to his age, I think Lyon is more like Borowski style of closer, so he may do the job, but not the way we want

That's my scoup on the pitchers, so what do you guys think?

Thanks for hitting me back man, I actually like the moves they've made, but like you said they could still do more, and they probably should if they want to keep up with the rest of the American League. I really like DeRosa, and I think Pavano is interesting, if he's even half of what he was for the Marlins I think we'll be very happy. Wood was actually alright last season, and if he STAYS HEALTHY who knows how valuable he could be. That's just it though, we need to stay healthy if we want to have any chance of contending. I like the youth we have, hopefully LaPorta can come in and be a factor this year, and I like the veteran leadership we have. Our pitching is pretty good, what I'm worried about is our offense. Hafner has to step up and reemerge as a slugger for us, Victor has to stay healthy, and hopefully there's a few pleasent surprises along the way. I give the off-season a B- for now, just because we could use another big bat like you were saying, but it was nice to hear your input. Biggest concern for me is staying healthy, if we do that we should fare pretty well. Go Tribe, and GO CAVS!

Hey man, I read your Indians off-season blog and I was just wondering what your opinion is thus far, with the aquisitions of Carl Pavano, Mark DeRosa, and Kerry Wood. Do these pitchers have anything left in the tank? Will DeRosa stay hot in Cleveland? Just wondered what your opinion was.
